The Florence light rail project will cross the historic center of Florence from Santa Maria Novella Railway station, passing through via Panzani and Cerretani, then Piazza san Giovanni with the Baptistry, then the X́Cathedral, via Martelli and Via Cavour until Piazza della Libertà The first monument to be crossed is the church of santa Maria Novella with its Masaccio paintings. Then the church of santa Maria Maggiore, and the the baptistry. The baptistry of St. John the Baptist is known at least from 897 AD and the train will pass at approximately 3 mt away from the nort portal made by Lorenzo Ghiberti. The column of san Zanobi will be certenly moved. It stands in the same position from 26 January 429 when an old olmo tree touched by chance by the coffin of San Zanobi whose corpse was being translated from San Lorenzo to the new cathedral of Santa Reparata, started to bloom despite the cold winter. In that place in 1384 the old olmo tree was substituted by a stone column with a bronze sculpture of the old tree. After the Baptistry ther is palazzo Medici Riccardi built by Michelozzo with the beatuful frescos of Benozzo Gozzoli. The accessibility and stability of the biulding are severely under threat. Recently as shown below some roman buildings, very important for the medieval and roman history of Florence, have been documented being under the area whereby the train should pass. The buildings include the old cardo maximus and the city gate named as Contra Aquilonem. The roman rests are in very good shape and if the light rail is built will be lost forever under a load of concrete. Finally there is the old monastery of San Marco with the frescos of Fra' Beato Angelico. Is this not enough to sign our petition? |
